Advertising with Your Feet

17.1. – 19.2.2023

Adolph von Menzel’s unusual self-portrait of 1876, an unsparingly detailed reproduction of his right foot, elevates that body fragment to a subject worthy of portraiture. Used as a motif in posters, the foot is often highly symbolic: a metaphor of life and of rootedness generally, though it can also stand for brute force and even death. The views of feet presented in cultural, commercial or political posters vary considerably from the illustrative or graphic to the photographic, from the realistically reproduced to the artistically stylized. The mannequin’s smooth, impeccably pedicured foot makes for a striking contrast with the rough, wrinkled soles that clearly tell a very different story.
