Welcome: Christian Brändle, Director Museum für Gestaltung Zurich
Introduction: Barbara Junod, curator of the exhibition
Walter F. Haettenschweiler (1933-2014) is best known as a designer of title fonts that were refreshingly different from the mainstream of the time. While still training as a graphic designer in the 1950s, he designed the legendary Schmalfette Grotesk, which later achieved cult status and was used as a Microsoft system font. His Lettera volumes, published with Armin Haab and featuring his own and newly published typeface designs, also attracted worldwide attention. The passionate artist and collector earned his living, however, with everyday graphics, which he created in his “Studio for Advertising and Design” for companies in the Zug region and national institutions. The show presents the complete works of the charismatic Swiss designer for the first time.
