Introduction: Renate Menzi, curator of the exhibition and the design collection, Museum für Gestaltung Zurich

Swiss design pioneer Willy Guhl (1915–2004) designed world-famous seating furniture such as the Eternit Loop Chair or Europe’s first bucket seat made of plastic. For decades, Guhl represented a holistic design approach that was oriented on people and their needs: durability, functionality and the reduction to essentials characterize his comfortable interiors and intelligent objects for daily use. As a teacher at Zurich School of Arts and Crafts (today Zurich University of the Arts), he showed generations of interior architects and product de-signers how good design is recognized with all the senses. The exhibition uses design processes, prototypes, photos, and films to present Willy Guhl’s creative work and offers visitors plenty of opportunities for a hands-on approach.
