In Double Take, Cortis & Sonderegger reconstructed iconic historical photos by meticulously recreating them as models in their studio and photographing them—alongside the tools and materials of their making. With Studio, the very place where these trompe-l’oeils have been created since 2012 is their subject. Situated between photographically captured reality and reproduction, these images also challenge us. At first glance, the installation appears to document the studio. But can we trust what we first see? Proportions and perspectives are distorted, scales are off, textures seem too small or too large. In this project, Cortis & Sonderegger not only comment on the studio as a place where images are created, but also point to photography as a medium of craftsmanship, even in times of AI image production.
