The battle for or against ornamentation was one of the fiercest in the history of modernism. For decades, the form without ornament was considered the only "good" form and also the hallmark of Swiss design. However, patterns have long since found their way back into the design of things with relish and subtlety. After a foray through the Collection Highlights, they experiment with pattern printing in the studio.

Cyanotype is the name of the process from the early days of photography, which makes use of the light sensitivity of an iron salt. Objects can be depicted on special paper without the need for equipment or a darkroom. At the Bauhaus, experimenting with such photograms was part of the basic curriculum. Rearrange things again and again in the workshop: changing the intensity of the exposure creates surprising graphic effects!
