About the project

From experiments with new materials such as plastic or fiber cement to his "studies on seating forms" and a photographic "collection of benches": the design of seating furniture is one of Willy Guhl's central themes. Reason enough to take a closer look at seating in the "GuhlSchool". As part of the Sitzstudien: Chillout! project, questions of ergonomics were examined, while the Josef sitzt campaign invited residents to philosophize about the act of sitting, the chair as an object and its significance in everyday life, as well as to get hands-on - the results could be seen as interventions in the Willy Guhl - Thinking with Your Hands exhibition. And the Design Kids Club issues #12 and #13 dealt with street furniture.

It doesn't always have to be a chair! had the Design Kids try out numerous different ways of sitting. Whether on the floor, a cushion or a tree trunk: seating can be found everywhere. What is important here?

The children drew seating visions for illustrious personalities from cultural history, built miniature models of their chair alternatives and 1:1 prototypes. They then recorded video clips in which they demonstrated their use. Finally, the children were able to gain hands-on experience in drilling, screwing and gluing using a kit from Noelani Rutz and individual stool parts prefabricated by the museum workshop. The stools were arranged into ever new seating formations and were exhibited in the museum from 28.2. - 26.3.2023 together with other results of the "GuhlSchool".

The knowledge gained from the "GuhlSchool" was collected in order to further sharpen the profile of design education at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. They were directly implemented in the development of the interactive station "Thinking" in the exhibition Willy Guhl - Thinking with Your Hands (9.12.2022 - 26.3.2023) and in the planning of the education program and will lead to the conception and the education program of a new permanent exhibition of the collections, which will open on the occasion of the 150th anniversary in 2025 in the Toni-Areal.

Museumjung
