- What makes the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich an important place for young people? How can the institution "museum" become part of their cultural identity(ies)?
- What could the collections mean to children and young people in relation to the global and local issues that are currently preoccupying them?
- Which objects in the museum are they really fascinated by and why? Can they relate to the collections at all?
- Where and how do young people want to get involved in the museum?
- How can the museum incorporate their expertise? Which conventions and routines in museum work might need to be changed?
As part of the three-year outreach project Museumjung with Schule Limmat (April 2021 to March 2024), the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich opened itself up to youth-oriented questions and perspectives. The focus was on the cultural heritage preserved in the collections, exploring the specific potential of design education as well as museological and strategic issues. Museumjung was intended to act as an incubator that could intensify and accelerate the museum's process of change towards greater cultural participation, more participatory exhibition practices and the further development of innovative design education.
Museumjung was divided into three project phases with internal school and public sub-projects - including project lessons, project days and week, Design Kids Club, youth collective, exhibitions and activities in the neighborhood:
- The first phase, "Building Site", served to establish viable structures between the museum and the school.
- The second phase, "GuhlSchool", was in the context of the research and exhibition project "Willy Guhl - Thinking with your hands".
- The third phase, "DesignScouts", led directly to the conception, design and mediation programs of a critical and activating, sensual and enjoyable new presentation of the collections. One highlight was the contribution "Jugendkollektiv: jung love Züri" for the exhibition "Collection Insights - Sieben Perspektiven".
