Project lessons #14 and #15: Public (T)spaces

6 February, 2024

Raising young people's awareness of their own designed living environment was one of the central concerns of the Museumjung project. Not only in the context of the GuhlSchool was the public space in the vicinity of the museum and school scrutinized in the Design Kids Club, several project lesson formats and in the youth collective.

About the project

In Public (T)Spaces, students explored the possibilities of photographic research methods. They learned about basic photographic design approaches and tried them out in
initial photographic field research in the neighborhood. This allowed them to experience photography as a tool for collecting and collecting as a tool for thinking. They wrote and drew on the photographs immediately after taking them, turning the photograph itself into a collection surface and data carrier of thoughts and dreams in public space.

Using examples from Germany and abroad, the students explored different urban situations. How is public space defined? In which public space do we live and move around in Zurich? What do we do there and what activities do we pursue? What tasks are associated with public space for a city? What problems could arise here, e.g. as a result of climate change? The pupils formulated questions, thoughts and reflections on public space and, in a next step, their wishes, demands and dreams.

In addition to the immediate surroundings of the school and museum, they examined selected places such as Europaallee or Negrellisteig for essential, disruptive or missing elements with their cameras and drew their observations and wishes on the resulting photographs.

Finally, they designed manifesto-like posters that brought their young dreams back into the public space: the dreams ranged from football pitches and graffiti sites, to nature and fountains, to simply "more peace and quiet".

The experiences and findings of both courses were collected in order to further sharpen the profile of design education at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. They will be incorporated into the concept and educational program for a new permanent exhibition of the collections, which will open in the Toni-Areal in 2025 to mark the 150th anniversary of the museum.

Museumjung
