Project documentation
Raum erleben - Räume entwerfen was one of several courses as part of the Museumjung project, in which the students explored the neighborhood between the museum and the school. Both institutions are located next door to each other in the migrant and increasingly gentrified industrial district of Kreis 5, which is characterized by a high level of cultural diversity.

The pupils come from this catchment area. The starting point for experiencing spaces - designing spaces was their daily journey to school. They were concerned with the question of what makes this journey so personal and how they perceive the public space in their surroundings.
All of their senses were activated on short walks in order to develop a more precise understanding of their immediate surroundings and the urban structure. What objects, colors, noises, lighting conditions or sounds characterize District 5? The impressions were documented using drawings, collages and sound recordings. Every detail and special feature was recorded in order to capture the unique landscape architectural qualities of the district.
In the next step, these creative means were used to transfer the collected impressions into a collective map on which all of the students' routes to school were recorded. The result was an interplay of individual perceptions and experiences. Each route became a distinctive element on the map, reflecting the diversity of public space in District 5. The creative means enabled the students to express their personal perspectives on the space and to name the similarities and differences in their experiences.
Other courses related to the neighborhood were the project lessons #1: FotoScouts and #14: Public (T)Spaces, the projects Looking and Collecting: Photography is More than a Photo and Collecting Photographically: Designing Public Space as part of Museum Week, Design Kids Club #12: Street Furniture / Instead of Furniture and #13: Prototypes for Street Furniture / Instead of Furniture, as well as Youth Collective 1 and 2.
