Since the invention of the supermarket, hardly any product has been sold without packaging. The design collection contains over 20,000 product packages from all areas of daily use. As part of VerpackungVerpackung, secondary school pupils took a close look at current product packaging. They analyzed and interpreted them from different perspectives. Topics included sustainability, marketing, design, protective function and information content. In some cases, entire lists of associated terms were also created for sensory and emotional aspects.
With the help of AI (artificial intelligence) "DALL-E 2", these terms were used to generate images that reflect the different moods of the packaging. As a final product, the students designed sample fans that represent their view of current consumer goods.
Museumjung: DesignScouts was the first Education exhibition with AI-generated exhibits. Museum visitors were invited to use the "Ai" sample fan to find matching images for the product packaging on display.
In the Museumjung project, formats with digital tools from "Kahoot!" to AI were tested and further developed for the education of other exhibitions at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. The experiences and findings will be incorporated into the concept and education program for the new permanent exhibition of the collections, which will open in the Toni-Areal in 2025 to mark the 150th anniversary of the museum.
