The design collection contains over 20,000 items of product packaging. A selection can be seen in the Collection Highlights exhibition. They were the starting point for the students' in-depth research into historical and current product packaging. The course was based on project lesson #11: PackagingPackaging 1, in which students created a collection of product packaging. They developed symbols for evaluation categories such as design, information content, protective function, marketing and sustainability, to which they assigned the collected packaging. The end product was a sample fan for orientation on the consumer goods market.
At the explicit request of the students, PackagingPackaging 2 focused on their own design processes such as photographic techniques and object staging. The AI "DALL-E 2" was used for this. The students analyzed the collected packaging. Entire lists of associated terms were created and fed into the AI. "DALL-E 2" translated the identified colors, shapes, scents and memories into images that reflect these moods. A newly designed "Packaging fan Ai" reflects the students' view of current products, reflects their interpretations and shows how new technologies can be used.
The results of both courses were exhibited in the museum's vestibule from October 24 to November 19, 2023 under the title Museumjung: DesignScouts. The experiences and findings from PackagingPackaging 1 and 2 will be incorporated into the concept and educational program for the collections' new permanent exhibition, which will open in the Toni-Areal in 2025 to mark the museum's 150th anniversary.
