Carolien Niebling – Future-Proof Plating

Is algae the food of the future? In the wake of the climate crisis, edible water plants could become an important source of nutrition. Future-proof Plating proposes a different look at these largely underutilised plants by highlighting their immanent beauty. By taking food out of its original context—the kitchen or the shop—and into a museum, designer and researcher Carolien Niebling’s (*1984) project gives us the possibility to see food differently, free from the question “would I eat this?” On display are about 25 ceramic plates, photographic banners and a selection of postcards to take home.
